Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 17:1411

Waki' narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Ghalib al-'Abdi, from a man from Banu Tamim, from his father, from his grandfather or his great-grandfather, who said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, my father sends you greetings of peace." He said, "Upon you and upon your father be peace." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, my people want to appoint me as an 'Arif (a leader or overseer)." He said, "There must be an 'Arif, and the 'Arif is in the Fire."
