Hadith 17:1415

Ibn ‘Ulayyah narrated to us, from Ghalib, who said: We were sitting when a man entered and said: My father narrated to me, from my grandfather, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever initiates a greeting to a people, he excels them by ten good deeds." And he said: My father sent me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "Go to him and convey the greeting to him, and say to him: He requests of you that you appoint for him the *‘irafah* (leadership/supervision) after him." He said: "The *‘irafah* is a right, the *‘irafah* is a right, and there must be *‘urafa* (leaders/supervisors), but the *‘arif* (leader/supervisor) is in an ugly position."
