Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 17:749

Yahya ibn Wadih narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn Qusayt, from Abu al-Hasan al-Barrad, who said: When this verse was revealed: "And the poets, the deviators follow them," Abdullah ibn Rawahah, Ka'b ibn Malik, and Hassan ibn Thabit came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) while they were weeping. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has revealed this verse, and He knows that we are poets." He said: "Read what is after it: 'Except those who believe and do righteous deeds'—that is you—'and remember Allah often and defend themselves after they were wronged'—that is you."
