Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 23:173

Yazid narrated to us, he said: Sufyan ibn Husayn informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah ibn Utbah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: A man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "I saw a canopy dripping with ghee and honey, and the people were taking from it; some taking much, some taking little, and some in between. And it was as if a rope had been lowered from the sky, so I came and took hold of it, and I ascended, and Allah raised you. Then a man came after you and took hold of it and ascended, and Allah raised him. Then a man came after both of you and took hold of it and ascended, and Allah raised him. Then a man came after you all and took hold of it, but it broke for him, then it was joined for him and he ascended, and Allah raised him." Abu Bakr said: "Permit me, O Messenger of Allah, to interpret it." He permitted him. He said: "As for the canopy, it is Islam. As for the ghee and honey, it is the Quran. As for the rope, it is that which you are upon; you ascend and Allah raises you. Then there will be a man after you upon your path, and he will ascend and Allah will raise him. Then a man after both of you will take hold as you both did, and he will ascend and Allah will raise him. Then there will be a man after you all upon your path, then it will break for him, then it will be joined for him and he will ascend, and Allah will raise him." He [the Prophet] said: "You have hit the mark, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "You have hit the mark and you have erred." He said: "I adjure you, O Messenger of Allah, to tell me." He said: "Do not adjure."
