Hadith 23:178
Hawdha ibn Khalifa narrated to us, he said: Awf narrated to us, from Abu Raja’, he said: Samura ibn Jundub narrated to us, he said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say to his companions, "Has any of you seen a vision?" So he would relate to him what Allah willed for him to relate. He said to us one morning, "Two comers—or two—came to me tonight (the doubt is from Hawdha), and they said to me, 'Go.' So I went with them, and we came upon a man lying down, and behold, another was standing over him with a rock, and behold, he would strike his head with the rock, smashing his head with it. The stone would roll away here, and he would take it, and he would not return to it until his head became as it was before. Then he would return to him and do to him as he did the first time." He said: I said to them, "Glory be to Allah! What is this?" They said to me, "Go, go." So we went until we came upon a man lying on his back, and behold, another was standing over him with an iron hook, and behold, he would come to one side of his face and tear his jaw to his nape, his eye to his nape, and his nostril to his nape. Then he would move to the other side and do to him the same. He would not finish with it until that side became as it was before, then he would return to him and do to him as he did the first time. I said to them, "Glory be to Allah! What is this?" They said to me, "Go, go." So we went until we came upon something like a furnace building—he said: I think he said we heard in it clamor and voices—so we went, and behold, in it were naked men and women, and behold, a flame would come to them from beneath them. When that flame came to them, they would shriek. He said: I said to them, "Who are these?" They said to me, "Go, go." He said: We went until we came upon a river—I think he said red like blood—and behold, in the river was a man swimming, and behold, on the bank of the river was a man who had gathered many stones near him. Behold, that swimmer would swim for as long as he swam, then he would come to the one who had gathered the stones, and he would open his mouth for him, and he would feed him a stone. Then he would go and swim for as long as he swam, then he would come to him. Every time he returned, he would open his mouth for him, and he would feed him the stone. He said: I said, "What is this?" They said to me, "Go, go." He said: We went and came upon a man of repulsive appearance, the most repulsive appearance you have ever seen, and behold, he was by a fire, fueling it and running around it. He said: I said to them, "What is this?" They said to me, "Go, go." So we went until we came upon a grassy garden in which was every spring blossom, and behold, in the midst of the garden was a tall man, I could hardly see his head for his height in the sky, and behold, around the man were the most children I have ever seen. I think he said: I said to them, "What is this, and who are these?" They said to me, "Go, go." So we went and arrived at a great tree, the like of which I have never seen in greatness or beauty. He said: He said to me, "Ascend it." So I ascended it, and we arrived at a city built with bricks of gold and bricks of silver. He said: We came to the gate of the city and asked for it to be opened, and it was opened for us, so we entered it. We were met therein by men, half of whose bodies were the most beautiful you have ever seen, and half were the most repulsive you have ever seen. He said: They said to them, "Go and fall into that river." He said: Behold, a river crossing it, flowing as if its water were pure milk in whiteness. He said: So they went and fell into it, then they returned to us, and the evil had departed from them, and they became in the most beautiful form. He said: They said to me, "This is the Garden of Eden, and that is your dwelling." He said: While my gaze was ascending, behold, a palace like a white cloud. They said to me, "That is your dwelling." He said: I said to them, "May Allah bless you both, let me enter it." He said: They said to me, "As for now, no, but you shall enter it." He said: I said to them, "I have seen wonders tonight, so what is this that I have seen?" He said: They said, "As for us, we will inform you. As for the first man you came upon whose head was being smashed with the rock, he is a man who takes the Quran and sleeps through the obligatory prayer. As for the man you came upon whose jaw, eye, and nostril were being torn to his nape, he is a man who goes out from his house and tells a lie that reaches the horizons. As for the naked men and women who were in something like a furnace, they are the adulterers and adulteresses. As for the man who was swimming in the river and being fed stones, he is the consumer of usury. As for the man by the fire of repulsive appearance, he is Malik, the guardian of Hell. As for the tall man in the garden, he is Abraham. As for the children around him, every child who died upon the natural disposition (fitra)." He said: Some of the Muslims said, "O Messenger of Allah, and the children of the polytheists?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "And the children of the polytheists." "As for the people, half of whom were the most repulsive you have seen and half the most beautiful you have seen, they are a people who mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil, so Allah forgave them."
