Hadith 4:586
Hatim ibn Isma'il narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Harmalah, that the people saw the crescent moon of al-Fitr when the sun had passed its zenith, so some of them broke their fast. I mentioned that to Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, and he said: "The people saw it in the time of 'Uthman, so some of them broke their fast. 'Uthman said: 'As for me, I will complete my fast until the night.'" He said: "And it was seen in the time of Marwan, so Marwan threatened those who broke their fast." Sa'id said: "And Marwan was correct."
حدثنا حاتم بن إسماعيل عن عبد الرحمن بن حرملة أن الناس رأوا هلال الفطر حين زاغت الشمس فأفطر بعضهم فذكرت ذلك لسعيد بن المسيب فقال رآه الناس في زمن عثمان فأفطر بعضهم فقال عثمان أما أنا فمتم صيامي إلى الليل قال ورئي في زمن مروان فتوعد مروان من أفطر قال سعيد فأصاب مروان
