Hadith 4:591
Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Mughirah, from Ibrahim, who said: Utbah ibn Farqad was absent in al-Sawad, and they sighted the crescent moon at the end of the day, so they broke their fast. That reached Umar, so he wrote to him: "When the crescent moon is sighted at the beginning of the day, it is for the day that has passed, so break your fast. But when the crescent moon is sighted at the end of the day, it is for the current day, so complete the fast."
حدثنا محمد بن فضيل عن مغيرة عن إبراهيم قال كان عتبة بن فرقد غاب بالسواد فابصروا الهلال من آخر النهار فافطروا فبلغ ذلك عمر فكتب إليه أن الهلال إذا رئي من أول النهار فإنه لليوم الماضي فافطروا فإذا رئي هلال من آخر النهار فإنه لليوم الجاري فأتموا الصيام
