Hadith 34:245
Narrated to us Kathir, from Ja'far, from Maymun: When this verse was revealed: "And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses, lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept their testimony ever," a man said: "If a man sees in his family what he dislikes, and he goes to gather four [witnesses], the man [the offender] will have finished his need. And if he mentions that, he will be lashed, his testimony will not be accepted, and he will be among the defiantly disobedient." Then the verse of *Li'an* (imprecation) was revealed. That man who said what he said was the first to be tested with this, and the verse of *Li'an* was revealed.
