Hadith 34:97
Al-Fadl narrated to us, Hisham bin Sa’d narrated to us, from Zayd bin Aslam, who said: Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah said: The first day I recognized the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was that I was walking with Abu Jahl in Makkah, and we met the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He said to him, "O Abu al-Hakam, come to Allah, to His Messenger, and to His Book. I invite you to Allah." He said, "O Muhammad, will you not cease insulting our gods? Do you want anything other than that we testify that you have delivered [the message]? We testify that you have delivered [the message]." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) turned away from him. He [Abu Jahl] turned to me and said, "By Allah, I know that what he says is the truth, but the Banu Qusay said, 'We have the guardianship of the Kaaba,' and we said, 'Yes.' Then they said, 'We have the hosting of pilgrims,' and we said, 'Yes.' Then they said, 'We have the council,' and we said, 'Yes.' Then they said, 'We have the provision of water,' and we said, 'Yes.' Then they fed, and we fed, until when the knees rubbed together [i.e., we became equals], they said, 'A prophet is from among us.' By Allah, I will not do it."
حدثنا الفضل حدثنا هشام بن سعد عن زيد بن أسلم قال قال المغيرة بن شعبة إن أول يوم عرفت فيه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أني كنت أمشي مع أبي جهل بمكة فلقينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال له يا أبا الحكم هلم إلى الله وإلى رسوله وإلى كتابه أدعوك إلى الله فقال يا محمد ما أنت بمنته عن سب آلهتنا هل تريد إلا أن نشهد أن قد بلغت فنحن نشهد أن قد بلغت قال فانصرف عنه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فأقبل علي فقال والله إني لأعلم أن ما يقول حق ولكن بني قصي قالوا فينا الحجابة فقلنا نعم ثم قالوا فينا القرى فقلنا نعم ثم قالوا فينا الندوة فقلنا نعم ثم قالوا فينا السقاية فقلنا نعم ثم أطعموا وأطعمنا حتى إذا تحاكت الركب قالوا منا نبي والله لا أفعل
