Hadith 6:1260
Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from al-Minhal, from Zadhan, from al-Bara', who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for the funeral of a man from the Ansar. We reached the grave, and it had not yet been dug (the *lahd* niche). The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sat down, and we sat around him as if birds were upon our heads. In his hand was a stick with which he was poking the ground. He raised his head and said: "Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave," three times or two times. Then he said: "When the believing servant is in the state of departing from the world and approaching the Hereafter, angels descend to him from the heaven with white faces, as if their faces were the sun. They sit with him as far as the eye can see. They have with them a shroud from the shrouds of Paradise and embalming perfume from the embalming perfume of Paradise. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits at his head and says: 'O good soul, come out to the forgiveness of Allah and His pleasure.' It comes out, flowing just as a drop flows from the mouth of a waterskin. When they take it, they do not leave it in his hand for the blinking of an eye until they take it and place it in that shroud and that embalming perfume. There comes out from it the finest scent of musk found on the face of the earth. They ascend, and they do not pass by any company of angels but that they say: 'What is this good soul?' They say: 'This is so-and-so, son of so-and-so,' using the best names he was called by in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened, and it is opened for them. Those who are near to Allah from every heaven accompany it to the heaven that follows it, until it reaches the seventh heaven. Allah says: 'Write the record of My servant in *'Illiyyun* in the seventh heaven, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, and into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth another time.' His soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and make him sit up. They say to him: 'Who is your Lord?' He says: 'My Lord is Allah.' They say to him: 'What is your religion?' He says: 'My religion is Islam.' They say to him: 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He says: 'He is the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).' They say: 'What is your deed?' He says: 'I read the Book of Allah, believed in it, and affirmed it.' A caller calls from the heaven: 'My servant has spoken the truth, so spread out for him from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise.' There comes to him some of its fragrance and its scent, and his grave is expanded for him as far as his eye can see. A man with a handsome face, handsome clothes, and a pleasant scent comes to him and says: 'Receive glad tidings of that which pleases you; this is your day which you were promised.' He says: 'Who are you? For your face is the face that brings good.' He says: 'I am your righteous deed.' He says: 'My Lord, establish the Hour so that I may return to my family and my wealth.'" "And when the disbelieving servant is in the state of departing from the world and approaching the Hereafter, angels descend to him from the heaven with black faces, having with them coarse hair-cloth. They sit with him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits at his head and says: 'O wicked soul, come out to the wrath of Allah and His anger.' It disperses throughout his body, and it is pulled out, and the veins and nerves are severed with it, just as a skewer is pulled through wet wool. When they take it, they do not leave it in his hand for the blinking of an eye until they take it and place it in that coarse hair-cloth. There comes out from it the foulest stench of a carcass found on the face of the earth. They ascend with it, and they do not pass by any company of angels but that they say: 'What is this wicked soul?' They say: 'This is so-and-so, son of so-and-so,' using the ugliest names he was called by in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened, and it is not opened for him." Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) recited: *'The gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until the camel enters into the eye of the needle.'* He said: "Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) says: 'Write the record of My servant in *Sijjin* in the lowest earth, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, and into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth another time.' His soul is thrown down." Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) recited: *'And he who associates others with Allah - it is as though he had fallen from the sky and was snatched by the birds or the wind carried him down into a remote place.'* He said: "His soul is returned to his body, and the two angels come to him and make him sit up. They say to him: 'Who is your Lord?' He says: 'Ha, ha, I do not know.' They say to him: 'What is your religion?' He says: 'Ha, ha, I do not know.' A caller calls from the heaven: 'Spread out for him from the Fire, clothe him from the Fire, and open for him a door to the Fire.' There comes to him some of its heat and its scorching wind, and his grave is constricted upon him until his ribs are crushed together. A man with an ugly face, ugly clothes, and a foul stench comes to him and says: 'Receive glad tidings of that which displeases you; this is your day which you were promised.' He says: 'Who are you? For your face is the face that brings evil.' He says: 'I am your wicked deed.' He says: 'My Lord, do not establish the Hour, My Lord, do not establish the Hour.'"
