Hadith 6:1263

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr informed us, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The deceased hears the thumping of their sandals when they turn away from him, departing. If he is a believer, the prayer will be at his head, the zakat will be at his right, the fasting will be at his left, and the performance of good deeds—such as charity, maintaining ties of kinship, kindness, and doing good to people—will be at his feet. He is approached from the direction of his head, and the prayer says, "There is no entry from my side." He is approached from his right, and the zakat says, "There is no entry from my side." He is approached from his left, and the fasting says, "There is no entry from my side." He is approached from the direction of his feet, and the performance of good deeds—charity, maintaining ties of kinship, kindness, and doing good to people—says, "There is no entry from my side." He is told, "Sit up." The sun is represented to him as having neared its setting. He is told, "Inform us about what we ask you." He says, "Leave me until I pray." He is told, "You will do that, but inform us about what we ask you." He says, "And what do you ask me about?" They say, "What do you say about this man who was among you, and what do you testify regarding him?" He says, "Muhammad." They say, "Yes." He says, "I testify that he is the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and that he brought clear proofs from Allah, so we believed him." He is told, "Upon that you lived, upon that you died, and upon that you will be resurrected, if Allah the Exalted wills." Then his grave is widened for him by seventy cubits, and it is illuminated for him. Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and he is told, "Look at what Allah has prepared for you in it," so he increases in joy and happiness. Then his soul is made into a pleasant soul, which is a green bird that hangs from the trees of Paradise, and the body is returned to what it began from of the earth. That is the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in the worldly life and in the Hereafter." Muhammad said: ‘Umar ibn al-Hakam ibn Thawban said: Then he is told, "Sleep," so he sleeps like the sleep of a bridegroom, whom none wakes except the most beloved of his family to him, until Allah the Mighty and Majestic resurrects him. Muhammad said: Abu Salamah said: Abu Hurayrah said: If he is a disbeliever, he is approached from the direction of his head, and nothing is found for him. Then he is approached from his right, and nothing is found for him. Then he is approached from his left, and nothing is found for him. Then he is approached from the direction of his feet, and nothing is found for him. He is told, "Sit up," so he sits up, terrified and frightened. He is told, "Inform us about what we ask you." He says, "And what do you ask me about?" It is said, "What do you say about this man who was among you, and what do you testify regarding him?" He says, "Which man?" It is said, "The one who was among you." He does not find his name. It is said, "Muhammad." He says, "I do not know. I heard the people saying something, so I said what they said." It is said, "Upon that you lived, upon that you died, and upon that you will be resurrected, if Allah wills." Then a door to the Fire is opened for him, and he is told, "That is your seat and what Allah has prepared for you in it," so he increases in regret and destruction. Then his grave is constricted upon him until his ribs cross, and that is the "straitened life" which Allah the Exalted mentioned: "But whoever turns away from My Reminder - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., straitened] life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
