Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 6:1325

Ali bin Hashim narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Layla, from Ata, from Jabir, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took the hand of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf and went out with him to the palm trees. He was brought to Ibrahim, while he was breathing his last. He placed him in his lap and said: "O my son, I possess nothing for you against Allah." His eyes shed tears. Abd al-Rahman said to him: "Do you weep, O Messenger of Allah? Did you not forbid weeping?" He said: "I only forbade wailing, and two foolish, wicked voices: a voice at a time of blessing—that is amusement, play, and the flutes of Satan; and a voice at a time of calamity—scratching of faces, tearing of garments, and the clamor of Satan. This is only mercy, and whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. O Ibrahim, were it not that it is a true command, a truthful promise, and a path to be followed, and that our last will join our first, we would have grieved for you with a grief greater than this. And we are indeed saddened by you. The eye weeps and the heart grieves, and we do not say what angers the Lord."
