Hadith 6:651
Waki’ narrated to us, from Isma’il, from al-Sha’bi, from ‘Alqama ibn Qays, that he arrived from al-Sham. He said to ‘Abdullah: "I saw Mu’adh ibn Jabal and his companions in al-Sham performing five takbirs over the funeral prayers. So set a time (or: set a number) for us that we may follow you in it." He said: ‘Abdullah lowered his head for a while, then said: "Perform takbir as your Imam performs takbir; there is no set time and no set number."
حدثنا وكيع عن إسماعيل عن الشعبي عن علقمة بن قيس أنه قدم من الشام فقال لعبد الله إني رأيت معاذ بن جبل وأصحابه بالشام يكبرون على الجنائز خمسا فوقتوا ( ( ( فوقتها ) ) ) لنا وقتا ( ( ( وقتها ) ) ) نتابعكم عليه قال فاطرق عبد الله ساعة ثم قال كبروا ما كبر إمامكم لا وقت ولا عدد
