Hadith 6:833

Jarir narrated to us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from the jurists of the people of Medina, who said: There were two men in Medina who used to prepare graves. One of them used to dig a *shaqq* (a trench in the center of the grave) and the other used to dig a *lahd* (a niche in the side of the grave). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away, they said: "Whichever of the two appears, command him to perform the work he used to do." The one who used to dig the *lahd* appeared, so they commanded him, and he dug a *lahd* for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
