Hadith 8:1805
Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Ma’iz ibn Malik—or Malik ibn Ma’iz—al-Thaqafi, who said: My father drove two sacrificial animals (hady) on behalf of himself, his wife, and his daughter, but he lost them at Dhu al-Majaz. When the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) arrived, he mentioned that to Umar. Umar said: "Wait for today, tomorrow, and the day after, for the sacrifice is only during these three days. If you find your two sacrificial animals, slaughter them both. If you do not find them, buy two sacrificial animals on the third day and slaughter them. Nothing that is forbidden to you becomes lawful until you slaughter them, or two other sacrificial animals." "If you slaughter the two sacrificial animals that you bought, and then you find the two lost sacrificial animals afterward, slaughter them [as well]."
