Hadith 8:2056
Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us, from Amr ibn Sa’id ibn Abi Husayn, from Uthman ibn Abi Sulayman, from Alqama ibn Nadla, who said: The houses of Makkah in the time of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and in the time of Abu Bakr and Umar, were called "as-Sawa'ib" (the free/unrestricted ones). Whoever was in need would dwell in them, and whoever was self-sufficient would let others dwell in them.
