Hadith 8:2067

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Isma’il ibn ‘Ulayyah narrated to us, from al-Taymi, from Abu Mijlaz, who said: I was with Ibn ‘Umar. When the sun rose, he ordered his riding beast, so it was saddled, and he departed from Mina and traveled. He said: He was fond of a man among us who used to talk to him about women and make him laugh. He said: When he prayed the Asr prayer, he stood at Arafat and began to raise his hands—or he said: extend them—and I do not know, perhaps he said: up to his ears. He began to say: "Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise. Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise. There is no god but Allah alone; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. O Allah, guide me with guidance, grant me success through piety, and forgive me in the Hereafter and the first life." Then he would return his hands and remain silent for the duration of what a person would take to recite the Opening of the Book (al-Fatiha). Then he would return and raise his hands and say the like of that. He did not cease doing that until he departed. He said: His pace was such that when he saw a wide path, he would let it go (at a trot), and when he saw a narrow path, he would hold back. When he came to a mountain among those mountains, he would stop at each mountain of them for the duration of what I say, or what the speaker says: "Its hands," and his feet did not stop. Then he descended a descent on the road and set off, and I followed him. I said: Perhaps he is doing something of the Sunnah. He said: "I am only going where you know." He came and performed wudu (ablution) at his leisure, then mounted and did not pray until he came to Jam’ (Muzdalifah). He called the iqamah and prayed the Maghrib prayer, then turned to us and said: "Is there a call to prayer (adhan)?" Or he said: "Is there any call other than that?" He said: "No." Then he prayed the Isha prayer as two rak'ahs, so he prayed five rak'ahs for Maghrib and Isha, and he did not perform voluntary prayers—or he said: he did not do anything between them. Then he called for food and said: "Whoever hears our voice, let him come to us." He said: It was as if he considered that to be like that effort. Then they spent the night, then he led us in the Morning prayer (Subh) in the darkness, while there was a star in the sky that I recognized but could not see. He recited "He frowned and turned away" (Abasa wa tawalla), and he did not perform qunut before the bowing nor after it. Then he stood and mentioned of his supplication in this station just as he did in his station yesterday. Then he continued his journey; when he saw a wide path, he would let it go, and when he saw a narrow path, he would hold back. He said: Ibn Abbas had informed me that the valley which is in front of Mina, which is called Muhassir, one should hasten through it. When he came upon it, he spurred his mount with his leg, and I knew that he wanted to hasten, but his mount tired him, so it made him hasten. Then he threw the pebble at the Jamrah. When the next day came, he threw the pebble at the Jamrah. He said: I think he said to me: It is called Harra. Then he advanced until he was between them and the middle one, and he mentioned of his supplication similar to that in the two stations, except that he added: "And rectify for me"—or he said: "And complete for us our rites." He said: His standing was for the duration of what a person would take, as it seems, to recite Surah Yusuf. Then he threw the pebble at the middle Jamrah, then advanced and mentioned of his supplication similar to that in his standing. He said: I said to Salim or Nafi’: "Did he say anything during his silence?" He said: "As for the Sunnah, no."
