The Book of Hajj

كتاب الحج

Hadith 8:2068

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Hatim ibn Isma'il narrated to us, from Ja'far, from his father, who said: We entered upon Jabir ibn Abdullah. He said, "Who are the people?" until he reached me. I said, "I am Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Husayn." He reached out with his hand to my head and removed my upper button, then he removed my lower button, then he placed his palm between my breasts—and I was a young boy on that day—and he said, "Welcome, O son of my brother. Ask about whatever you wish." I asked him while he was blind. The time for prayer came, and he stood up in a *nasajah* (a small garment), wrapped in it. Every time he placed it on his shoulder, its ends would slip back to him due to its small size, while his *rida* (cloak) was beside him on a peg. He prayed with us, and I said, "Inform me about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)." He gestured with his hand, counting nine, and said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stayed for nine years and did not perform Hajj. Then, in the tenth year, he announced to the people that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was going to perform Hajj. A great number of people came to Medina, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and do as he did. We went out with him until we reached Dhu al-Hulayfah. Asma bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, so she sent to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), "What should I do?" He said, "Perform ghusl, bind yourself with a cloth, and enter into ihram." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) prayed in the mosque, then mounted al-Qaswa. When his she-camel stood with him on the *Bayda* (the desert), I looked as far as my sight could reach in front of him—riders and pedestrians—and to his right the same, and to his left the same, and behind him the same. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was among us, and the Quran was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation. Whatever he did, we did. He proclaimed the oneness of Allah: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, inna al-hamda wa al-ni'mata laka wa al-mulk, la sharika laka" (Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise and grace are Yours, and the dominion; You have no partner). The people proclaimed this which they were proclaiming, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) did not reject any of it, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stuck to his own *talbiyah*. Jabir said: We did not intend anything but Hajj; we did not know about 'Umrah. Until we came to the House with him, he touched the Corner, trotted for three [circuits], and walked for four. Then he went forward to the Station of Ibrahim and recited: "And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer," and he placed the Station between himself and the House. My father used to say—and I do not know him to have mentioned it except from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)—that he used to recite in the two rak'ahs: "Say, He is Allah, [who is] One" and "Say, O disbelievers." Then he returned to the Corner and touched it. Then he went out from the door to al-Safa. When he drew near to al-Safa, he recited: "Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah." "I begin with what Allah began with." So he began with al-Safa, climbed upon it until he saw the House, faced the House, proclaimed the oneness of Allah, and magnified Him, and said: "There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion, and to Him is all praise, and He is over all things competent. There is no god but Allah alone; He fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates alone." Then he supplicated between that, saying the like of that three times. Then he descended to al-Marwah. When his feet reached the bottom of the valley, he ran until, when we ascended, he walked until he came to al-Marwah. He did on al-Marwah as he did on al-Safa. When it was the end of his *tawaf* at al-Marwah, he said: "If I had known in the beginning what I have come to know in the end, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals, and I would have made it an 'Umrah. So whoever among you does not have sacrificial animals with him, let him exit ihram and make it an 'Umrah." Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'sham stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this for our year only, or for forever?" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) interlaced his fingers one into the other and said, "The 'Umrah has entered into the Hajj—not once, but for forever, forever." Ali arrived from Yemen with the sacrificial animals of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and found Fatimah among those who had exited ihram, wearing dyed clothes and using kohl. He disapproved of that, and she said, "My father commanded me to do this." He said: Ali used to say in Iraq, "I went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), complaining about Fatimah for what she had done, seeking a fatwa from the Messenger of Allah regarding what she mentioned from him." He said: "I informed him that I disapproved of that for her." He said: "She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. What did you say when you assumed the state of Hajj?" I said, "O Allah, I assume the state of ihram for what Your Messenger has assumed." He said, "Then I have the sacrificial animals with me, so do not exit ihram." He said: The total number of sacrificial animals that Ali brought from Yemen and that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) brought was one hundred. He said: The people all exited ihram and cut their hair, except the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and those who had sacrificial animals with them. When it was the Day of Tarwiyah, they headed to Mina and assumed the state of Hajj. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) rode and prayed there the Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers. Then he stayed a little until the sun rose, and he ordered a dome of hair to be pitched for him at Namirah. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) traveled, and the Quraysh did not doubt but that he would stand at the Mash'ar al-Haram, as the Quraysh used to do in the Jahiliyyah. But the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed on until he came to Arafah and found that the dome had been pitched for him at Namirah, so he descended there. When the sun passed the meridian, he ordered al-Qaswa, and it was saddled for him. He came to the bottom of the valley and addressed the people, saying: "Verily, your blood and your wealth are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Behold, everything from the affairs of the Jahiliyyah is placed beneath my feet. The blood feuds of the Jahiliyyah are abolished, and the first blood I abolish from our blood is the blood of Ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith, who was nursed among Banu Sa'd and killed by Hudhayl. The usury of the Jahiliyyah is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is the usury of Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, for it is all abolished. So fear Allah regarding women, for you have taken them by the security of Allah and made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. You have the right over them that they should not allow anyone you dislike to tread on your bedding. If they do that, strike them, but not severely. They have the right over you to their provision and clothing in kindness. I have left among you that which you will not go astray after if you hold fast to it: the Book of Allah. And you will be asked about me, so what will you say?" They said, "We bear witness that you have conveyed, fulfilled, and advised." He said with his index finger, raising it to the sky and pointing it at the people, "O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness," three times. Then he gave the adhan, then the iqamah, and prayed Dhuhr and Asr, and did not pray anything between them. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) rode until he came to the station. He placed the belly of his she-camel, al-Qaswa, towards the rocks and placed the path of the pedestrians in front of him, and faced the Qiblah. He remained standing until the sun set and the yellow light had gone a little, until the disk disappeared. He let Usamah ride behind him. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) departed, and he had pulled the rein of al-Qaswa so tightly that its head touched the saddle-frame, and he was saying with his right hand, "O people, tranquility, tranquility!" Every time he came to a mountain pass, he loosened it a little so it could climb, until he came to Muzdalifah. He prayed Maghrib and Isha there with one adhan and two iqamahs, and did not pray anything between them. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) lay down until dawn broke. He prayed when the morning became clear to him with an adhan and an iqamah. Then he rode al-Qaswa until he came to the Mash'ar al-Haram, faced the Qiblah, supplicated to Him, magnified Him, proclaimed His oneness, and declared His greatness. He remained standing until it was very bright, then he departed before the sun rose. He let al-Fadl ibn Abbas ride behind him, and he was a man with beautiful hair, fair-skinned, and handsome. When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) departed, some women passed by, moving along, and al-Fadl began to look at them. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) placed his hand on his face. Al-Fadl turned his face to the other side to look, so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) moved his hand from the other side onto al-Fadl's face, turning his face away from the other side he was looking at, until he came to the bottom of Muhassir. He moved a little, then took the middle path that leads out to the Great Jamrah, until he came to the Jamrah that is by the tree. He pelted it with seven pebbles, saying "Allahu Akbar" with every pebble among them, like the pebbles of *khadhf* (throwing with fingers), and he pelted from the bottom of the valley. Then he turned to the place of slaughter and slaughtered sixty-three with his own hand. Then he gave [the rest] to Ali, and he slaughtered what remained of them, and he made him a partner in his sacrificial animals. He ordered a piece of meat from every camel, and it was put in a pot and cooked, and they both ate from its meat and drank from its broth. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) rode and went to the House, and prayed Dhuhr in Mecca. He came to the Banu Abd al-Muttalib, who were drawing water at Zamzam, and said, "Draw water, O Banu Abd al-Muttalib, for were it not that the people would overcome you regarding your drawing of water, I would have drawn with you." They handed him a bucket, and he drank from it.
