Hadith 8:723

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from al-Hakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn Abbas regarding [the verse]: "A compensation equivalent to what he killed from the livestock," up to his saying: "Or the equivalent of that in fasting." He said: If the pilgrim in ihram kills game, he is judged by its compensation from the livestock. If he does not find [livestock], he looks at what its price is, then he evaluates its price in food, and he fasts for every half-sa' one day, or [provides] an expiation of feeding poor people, or the equivalent of that in fasting, so that he may taste the consequence of his deed. He said: I only intended by "food" that if he finds the food, he has found its compensation.
