Hadith 29:101
Affan narrated to us, he said: Hammam narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Zurarah ibn Awfa, from Mutarrif ibn Malik, that he said: I witnessed the conquest of Tustar with al-Ash’ari. He said: We found Daniel in al-Sus. He said: The people of al-Sus, when they grew old, would bring him out and seek rain through him. We found with him sixty sealed jars. He said: We opened a jar from the nearest of them, a jar from the middle of them, and a jar from the furthest of them, and we found in every jar ten thousand. Hammam said: I do not think he said anything but ten thousand. We found with him two bundles of linen, and we found with him a small box containing a book. The first man who came upon it was from Banu Anbar, called Harqus. He said: Al-Ash’ari gave him the two bundles and gave him two hundred dirhams. He said: Then he requested the two bundles from him after that, but he refused to return them, and he tore them into turbans among his companions. He said: There was with us a Christian hired worker named Nu’aym. He said: Sell me this box with what is in it. They said: If there is no gold, silver, or the Book of Allah in it. He said: For that which is in it is the Book of Allah. They disliked selling the Book, so we sold him the box for two dirhams and gifted him the Book. Qatadah said: Hence, the selling of copies of the Quran was disliked, because al-Ash’ari and his companions disliked selling that book. Hammam said: Farqad al-Sabakhi claimed, he said: Abu Tamimah narrated to me that Umar wrote to al-Ash’ari: "Wash Daniel with lotus leaves and water of basil, and pray over him, for he is a prophet who prayed to his Lord that the Muslims would not see him."
حدثنا عفان قال حدثنا همام عن قتادة عن زرارة بن أوفى عن مطرف بن مالك أنه قال شهدت فتح تستر مع الأشعري قال فأصبنا دانيال بالسوس قال فكان أهل السوس إذا أسنوا أخرجوه فاستقوا به وأصبنا معه ستين جرة مختمة قال ففتحنا جرة من أدناها وجرة من أوسطها وجرة من أقصاها فوجدنا في كل جرة عشرة آلاف قال همام ما أراه إلا قال عشرة آلاف وأصبنا معه ربطتين من كتان وأصبنا معه ربعة فيها كتاب وكان أول رجل وقع عليه من بلعنبر يقال له حرقوص قال أعطاه الأشعري الربطتين وأعطاه مائتي درهم قال ثم إنه طلب إليه الربطتين بعد ذلك فأبى أن يردهما وشقها عمائم بين أصحابه قال وكان معنا أجير نصراني يسمى نعيما قال بيعوني هذه الربعة بما فيها قالوا إن لم يكن فيها ذهب أو فضة أو كتاب الله قال فإن الذي فيها كتاب الله فكرهوا أن يبيعوا الكتاب فبعناه الربعة بدرهمين ووهبنا له الكتاب قال قتادة فمن ثم كره بيع المصاحف لأن الأشعري وأصحابه كرهوا بيع ذلك الكتاب قال همام فزعم فرقد السبخي قال حدثني أبو تميمة أن عمر كتب إلى الأشعري أن تغسلوا دانيال بالسدر وماء الريحان وأن يصلى عليه فإنه نبي دعا ربه أن لا يريه المسلمون
