Hadith 29:107
Marhum ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, from his father, from Shadīs al-Adawī, who said: We went on a military expedition with the commander to al-Ubulla, and we conquered it. Then we reached al-Ahwaz and conquered it, and we obtained many captives. We divided them among ourselves, and a man would receive one or two heads [of captives]. We had intercourse with the women. Our commander wrote to Umar ibn al-Khattab regarding what had happened. He wrote back to him: "You do not have the capacity to cultivate the land. Release what you have in your hands of the captives, and do not own any of them, and impose upon them a tribute (kharaj) according to what they have in their hands of the land." So we released what we had in our hands of the captives. How many children were born to us [from them]—the matter was overwhelming. Among those we had captured were people from the Zutt who resembled the Arabs; they would grow their beards, wear the izar (waist-wrapper), and sit in the iḥtibā’ position (sitting with the knees drawn up to the chest) in their gatherings. He wrote to Umar regarding them, and Umar wrote back to him: "Bring them close to you; whoever among them accepts Islam, attach him to the Muslims." When we tested the people, they had no strength, while the Asawira (Persian cavalry) were stronger than them. He wrote to Umar regarding them, and Umar wrote back to him: "Bring them close to you; whoever accepts Islam, attach him to the Muslims."
حدثنا مرحوم بن عبد العزيز عن أبيه عن شديس العدوي قال غزونا مع الأمير الأبلة فظفرنا بها ثم انتهينا إلى الأهواز فظفرنا بها وأصبنا سبيا كثيرا فاقتسمناهم فأصاب الرجل الرأس والاثنين فوقعنا على النساء فكتب أميرنا إلى عمر بن الخطاب بالذي كان فكتب إليه إنه لا طاقة لكم بعمارة الأرض خلوا ما في أيديكم من السبي ولا تملكوا أحدا منهم واجعلوا عليهم من الخراج قدر ما في أيديهم من الأرض فتركنا ما في أيدينا من السبي فكم من ولد لنا غلبة الهماس وكان فيمن أصبنا أناس من الزط يتشبهون بالعرب يؤثرون لحاهم ويأتزرون ويحتبون في مجالسهم فكتب فيهم إلى عمر فكتب إليه عمر أن أدنهم منك فمن أسلم منهم فألحقه بالمسلمين فلما بلونا الناس لم يكن عندهم بأس وكانت الأساورة أشد منهم بأسا فكتب فيهم إلى عمر فكتب إليه عمر أن أدنهم منك فمن أسلم فألحقه بالمسلمين
