Hadith 29:116
Ghundar narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Simak, who said: I heard 'Iyad al-Ash'ari say: I witnessed Yarmouk, and we had five commanders over us: Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan, Ibn Hasanah, Khalid ibn al-Walid, and 'Iyad—and this 'Iyad is not the one from whom Simak narrated. He said: And Umar said, "If there is fighting, then Abu Ubaydah is in charge of you." He said: So we wrote to him that death had surged toward us, and we sought reinforcements from him. He said: So he wrote to us, "Your letter has reached me, in which you seek my help. I will guide you to One who is mightier in victory and more present in troops, so seek His help. Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was granted victory on the day of Badr with fewer than your number. So when this letter of mine reaches you, fight them and do not refer back to me." He said: So we fought them, and we defeated them, and we killed them over four leagues. He said: And we obtained wealth. He said: So we consulted one another, and 'Iyad suggested to us that we give the price of every head as ten. He said: And Abu Ubaydah said, "Who will race me?" He said: A young man said, "I will, if you do not get angry." He said: So he outpaced him. He said: I saw the two braids of Abu Ubaydah bouncing while he was behind him on an Arabian horse.
حدثنا غندر عن شعبة عن سماك قال سمعت عياضا الأشعري قال شهدت اليرموك وعلينا خمسة أمراء أبو عبيدة بن الجراح ويزيد بن أبي سفيان وبن حسنة وخالد بن الوليد وعياض وليس عياض هذا بالذي حدث عنه سماك قال وقال عمر إذا كان قتال فعليكم أبو عبيدة قال فكتبنا إليه أنه قد جاش إلينا الموت واستمددناه قال فكتب إلينا أنه قد جاء كتابكم تستمدوني وإني أدلكم على من هو أعز نصرا وأحضر جندا فاستنصروه وإن محمدا صلى الله عليه وسلم كان نصر يوم بدر في أقل من عددكم فإذا أتاكم كتابي هذا فقاتلوهم ولا تراجعوني قال فقاتلناهم فهزمناهم وقتلناهم في أربعة فراسخ قال وأصبنا أموالا قال فتشاورنا فأشار علينا عياض أن نعطي ثمن كل رأس عشرة قال وقال أبو عبيدة من يراهنني قال فقال شاب أنا إن لم تغضب قال فسبقه قال فرأيت عقيصتي أبي عبيدة تنقزان وهو خلفه على فرس عربي
