Hadith 29:133

Ja'far ibn 'Awn narrated to us, from Abu al-Umays, who said: Qays ibn Muslim informed me, from Tariq ibn Shihab, who said: When Umar arrived in al-Sham, he addressed the people and said: "I do not want to know of any man who tethers his horse among a group of people." He said: Then a boy was brought who was being carried, for the leg of a horse had struck him. Umar said to him: "Did you not hear my statement yesterday?" He said: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful." He said: "Then what drove you to do what you did?" He said: "I saw a vacant space on the road." He said: "I do not see you offering an excuse of a man." He said: "Bring two men against him, so they may take him out of the mosque and beat him severely." The people were silent, and none of them answered him. He said: Then he repeated his statement. Abu Ubaydah said to him: "O Commander of the Faithful, do you not see in the faces of the people a dislike that you should disgrace their companion?" He said: So he said to the people of the boy: "Go with him and treat him, for by Allah, if something happens to him, I will surely make an example of you." He said: The boy recovered, and Allah granted him health.
