Hadith 29:29
Abu Mu’awiyah narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Muhajir, from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sa’d, from his father, who said: Abu Mihjan was brought to Sa’d on the day of al-Qadisiyyah, and he had drunk wine, so he ordered that he be put in chains. He said: Sa’d had wounds, so he did not go out to the people that day. He said: They took him up above al-‘Udhayb so he could look at the people. He said: And he appointed Khalid ibn ‘Urfutah in command of the cavalry. When the people met [in battle], Abu Mihjan said: "It is enough of a sorrow that the horses are pierced by spears, While I am left tied in my bonds." He said to the daughter of Khasfah, the wife of Sa’d: "Release me, and I have upon me [the vow] that if Allah keeps me safe, I will return until I place my feet in the chains, and if I am killed, you will have found relief from me." He said: So she untied him when the people met. He said: He leaped onto a horse of Sa’d’s called al-Balqa’. He said: Then he took a spear and went out, and he would not charge at a side of the enemy but that he defeated them. He said: The people began to say, "This is an angel," because of what they saw him doing. He said: Sa’d began to say, "The gallop is the gallop of al-Balqa’, and the thrust is the thrust of Abu Mihjan, yet Abu Mihjan is in the chains." He said: When the enemy was defeated, Abu Mihjan returned until he placed his feet in the chains. The daughter of Khasfah informed Sa’d of what had happened regarding his affair. He said: Sa’d said, "By Allah, I will not strike a man today through whose hands Allah has tested the Muslims with what He has tested them." He said: So he released him. He said: Abu Mihjan said, "I used to drink it when the prescribed punishment was carried out upon me, so I would be purified by it. But since you have pardoned me, then by Allah, I will never drink it ever again."
