Hadith 29:30

'Affan narrated to us, he said: Abu 'Awana narrated to us, he said: Husayn narrated to us, from Abu Wa'il, who said: Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas came when he descended upon al-Qadisiyyah, and the people were with him. He said: I do not know, perhaps we did not exceed seven thousand or eight thousand, between that, and the polytheists were thirty thousand or thereabouts, and they had elephants. He said: When they descended, they said to us: "Return, for we do not see that you have numbers, nor do we see that you have strength or weapons, so return." He said: We said: "We are not returning." He said: And they began to laugh at our arrows and say: "Dawk," comparing them to spindles. He said: When we refused them, they said: "Send to us a rational man who will inform us of what brought you from your lands, for we do not see that you have numbers or equipment." He said: Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah said: "I will." He said: So he crossed over to them. He said: He sat with Rustam on the throne. He said: He snorted, and they snorted when he sat with him on the throne. He said: Al-Mughirah said: "Your companion has neither increased me nor decreased me in this sitting of mine." He said: He said: "Inform me what brought you from your lands, for I do not see that you have numbers or equipment." He said: He said: "We were a people in misery and misguidance, so Allah sent our Prophet among us, and Allah guided us at his hands, and provided for us at his hands. Among what He provided for us was a grain, which they claim grows in this land. When we ate from it and fed our families from it, they said: 'There is no good for us until you descend upon these lands, so we may eat this grain.'" He said: Rustam said: "Then we will kill you." He said: "If you kill us, we enter Paradise, and if we kill you, you enter the Fire, or else you pay the Jizyah." He said: When he said "pay the Jizyah," they shouted and snorted and said: "There is no peace between us and you." He said: Al-Mughirah said: "Will you cross over to us, or shall we cross over to you?" He said: Rustam said: "Rather, we will cross over to you." He said: The Muslims moved back from him until those who crossed, crossed. He said: Then the Muslims charged at them, killed them, and defeated them. Husayn said: Their king, Rustam, was from the people of Azerbaijan. Husayn said: I heard an elder of ours called 'Ubayd ibn Jahsh, who said: "I saw us walking on the backs of men, crossing the trench on the backs of men; no weapon touched them, for they had killed one another." He said: We found a pouch containing camphor. He said: We thought it was salt; we had no doubt that it was salt. He said: We cooked meat and threw some of it into it. When we found no taste in it, an 'Ibadi passed by us with a shirt. He said: He said: "O company of Arabs, do not spoil your food, for the salt of this land has no good in it. Will you give it to me in exchange for this shirt?" He said: So he gave us a shirt for it, and we gave it to a companion of ours, and he wore it. He said: We began to circle around him and marvel at it. He said: The price of the shirt, when we came to know clothes, was two dirhams. He said: I saw myself pointing to a man who had two gold bracelets on him, and his weapon was underneath in a grave among those graves, and I pointed to him, and he came out to us. He said: We did not speak to him until we struck his neck. We defeated them until they reached the Euphrates. He said: We mounted and pursued them, and they were defeated until they ended up at al-Mada'in. He said: We descended upon Kuthah. There was a garrison for the polytheists at Dayr al-Maslakh, and the cavalry of the Muslims came to them to fight them, and the garrison of the polytheists was defeated until they reached al-Mada'in. The Muslims marched until they descended upon the bank of the Tigris. A group of Muslims crossed from Kalwadha, below al-Mada'in, and besieged them until they found no food except their dogs and their cats. He said: They departed in one night until they arrived at Jalula. He said: Sa'd marched to them with the people, and on his vanguard was Hashim ibn 'Utbah. He said: And it was the battle that took place. He said: Allah destroyed them, and their remnants fled to Nahavand. He said: Abu Wa'il said: When the polytheists were defeated at Jalula, they came to Nahavand. He said: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab appointed Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman over the people of Kufa, and Mujashi' ibn Mas'ud al-Sulami over the people of Basra. He said: 'Amr ibn Ma'dikarib came and said to him: "Give me my horse and the weapon of someone like me." He said: "Yes, I will give you from my wealth." He said: 'Amr ibn Ma'dikarib said to him: "By Allah, we have attacked you and fought you, and we did not answer you, and we asked you, and we did not retreat from you." Husayn said: Al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin was over Kaskar. He said: He wrote to 'Umar: "O Commander of the Faithful, my likeness and the likeness of Kaskar is like a young man with a prostitute who adorns herself for him and perfumes herself. I adjure you by Allah to remove me from Kaskar and send me in an army of the armies of the Muslims." He said: He wrote to him: "March to the people at Nahavand, for you are over them." He said: So he marched to them, and they met, and he was the first to be killed. He said: Suwayd ibn Muqarrin took the banner, and Allah granted them victory, and Allah destroyed the polytheists, and no group stood for them after that day. He said: The people of every garrison would march to their enemy in their lands. Husayn said: When the polytheists were defeated from al-Mada'in, he followed them to Jalula, then returned and sent 'Ammar ibn Yasir, and he marched until he descended upon al-Mada'in. He said: He wanted to settle the people there, but the people found it unhealthy and disliked it. It reached 'Umar that the people disliked it, so he asked: "Is it suitable for camels there?" They said: "No, because there are mosquitoes there." He said: 'Umar said: "For the Arabs are not suitable in a land where camels are not suitable." He said: "So return." He said: Sa'd met an 'Ibadi, who said: "I will guide you to a land that is elevated from the lowlands, lowered from the salt flats, situated in the middle of the cultivated land, and thrust into the nose of the soil." He said: "A land between al-Hirah and the Euphrates."
