Hadith 29:4
Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Hammad ibn Salamah informed us, from Thumamah ibn Anas, from Anas, who said: I was between Khalid ibn al-Walid and al-Bara’ on the day of al-Yamamah. He said: Khalid sent the cavalry, and they came back defeated. Al-Bara’ began to tremble, and I began to lean him toward the ground while he was saying, "Any [support/foundation]! Any [support/foundation]! I am fasting." He said: Then Khalid sent the cavalry, and they came back defeated. He said: Khalid looked toward the sky and then toward the earth—and he used to do that when he intended a matter—then he said, "O Bara’, unite [your resolve]!" He said: He spoke to himself. He said: Then he said, "Now?" He said: He said, "Yes, now." He said: So al-Bara’ mounted his horse and began to strike it with his whip, and it is as if I am looking at it chewing its bit. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "O people of Medina, there is no Medina for you; it is only Allah alone, and Paradise." Then he charged, and the people charged with him. The people of al-Yamamah were defeated until he reached their fortress. Muhakkam al-Yamamah met him and struck him with a sword, but al-Bara’ shielded himself with his shield, and it struck the shield. Then al-Bara’ struck him and threw him to the ground. He took the sword of Muhakkam al-Yamamah and struck him with it until it broke. He said, "May Allah make ugly what remains of you," and he threw it away and returned to his own sword.
حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال أخبرنا حماد بن سلمة عن ثمامة بن أنس عن أنس قال كنت بين يدي خالد بن الوليد وبين البراء يوم اليمامة قال فبعث خالد الخيل فجاؤا منهزمين وجعل البراء يرعد فجعلت ألحده إلى الأرض وهو يقول أي أحدني أفطر قال ثم بعث خالد الخيل فجاؤا منهزمين قال فنظر خالد إلى السماء ثم إلى الأرض وكان يصنع ذلك إذا أراد الأمر ثم قال يا براء وحد في نفسه قال فقال الآن قال فقال نعم الآن قال فركب البراء فرسه فجعل يضربها بالسوط وكأني أنظر إليها تمضغ ثدييها فحمد الله وأثنى عليه وقال يا أهل المدينة إنه لا مدينة لكم وإنما هو الله وحده والجنة ثم حمل وحمل الناس معه فانهزم أهل اليمامة حتى أتى حصنهم فلقيه محكم اليمامة فضربه بالسيف فاتقاه البراء بالجحفة فأصاب الجحفة ثم ضربه البراء فصرعه فأخذ سيف محكم اليمامة فضربه به حتى انقطع فقال قبح الله ما بقي منك ورمى وعاد إلى سيفه
