Hadith 29:72
Abu Usama narrated to us, he said: Isma'il narrated to us, from Qays ibn Abi Hazim, from Mudrik ibn 'Awf al-Ahmasi, who said: While I was with 'Umar, the messenger of al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin came to him. 'Umar asked him about the people. He said: They mentioned to 'Umar those who were struck down on the day of Nahavand. They said: So-and-so was killed, and so-and-so, and others whom we do not know. 'Umar said: "But Allah knows them." They said: "And a man who sold himself," meaning 'Awf ibn Abi Hayya, Abu Shubayl al-Ahmasi. Mudrik ibn 'Awf said: "That, by Allah, is my maternal uncle, O Commander of the Faithful. The people claim that he cast himself into destruction." 'Umar said: "Those people have lied. Rather, he is among those who purchased the Hereafter with the worldly life." Isma'il said: He was struck down while he was fasting. He was carried while there was still a glimmer of life in him, but he refused to drink until he died.
حدثنا أبو أسامة قال ثنا إسماعيل عن قيس بن أبي حازم عن مدرك بن عوف الأحمسي قال بينا أنا عند عمر إذ أتاه رسول النعمان بن مقرن فسأله عمر عن الناس قال فذكروا عند عمر من أصيب يوم نهاوند فقالوا قتل فلان وفلان وآخرون لا نعرفهم فقال عمر لكن الله يعرفهم قالوا ورجل اشترى نفسه يعنون عوف بن أبي حية أبا شبيل الأحمسي قال مدرك بن عوف ذاك والله خالي يا أمير المؤمنين يزعم الناس أنه ألقى بيديه إلى التهلكة فقال عمر كذب أولئك ولكنه من الذين اشتروا الآخرة بالدنيا قال إسماعيل وكان أصيب وهو صائم فاحتمل وبه رمق فأبى أن يشرب حتى مات
