Hadith 29:76
Affan narrated to us, he said: Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, he said: Abu Imran al-Jawni informed us, from Alqama bin Abdullah al-Muzani, from Ma’qil bin Yasar, that Umar bin al-Khattab consulted al-Hurmuzan regarding Fars, Isfahan, and Azerbaijan. He said: "Isfahan is the head, and Fars and Azerbaijan are the two wings. If you cut off one of the wings, the head will lean toward the other wing, and if you cut off the head, the two wings will fall. So, begin with the head." He entered the mosque and found al-Nu’man bin Muqarrin praying, so he sat beside him. When he finished his prayer, he said: "I see no one for this but you." He said: "As a tax collector, no; but as a warrior, yes." He said: "Then you are a warrior." He dispatched him and wrote to the people of Kufa to reinforce him. He said: And with him were al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam, Amr bin Ma’di Karib, Hudhayfa, Ibn Umar, and al-Ash’ath bin Qays. He said: Al-Nu’man sent al-Mughira bin Shu’ba to their king, who was called Dhu al-Janahayn. He crossed the river to them. It was said to Dhu al-Janahayn: "The messenger of the Arabs is here." He consulted his companions and said: "What do you think? Should I sit for him in the splendor of kingship and the appearance of kingship, or in the appearance of war?" They said: "No, rather sit for him in the splendor of kingship." So he sat on his throne and placed the crown on his head, and the sons of kings sat in two rows, wearing earrings, gold bracelets, and brocade. He said: Permission was granted to al-Mughira. Two men took him by his upper arms, and he had his spear and his sword with him. He began to stab their carpets with his spear, tearing them to make them superstitious, until he stood before him. He began to speak to him, and the interpreter translated between them: "You, the group of Arabs, have been struck by hunger and hardship, so you have come. If you wish, we will provide for you and you shall return." Al-Mughira bin Shu’ba spoke, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "We, the group of Arabs, were humiliated; they would trample us and we would not trample them, and we would eat dogs and carrion. Then Allah sent among us a Prophet from our nobility, the most middle-ranked of us in lineage and the most truthful of us in speech." He said: "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent us with what he sent us with, and he informed us of things we found to be as he said. He promised us, among what he promised us, that we would possess what is here and be victorious. I see here finery and appearance that those behind me will not leave until they attain it." He said: "My soul said to me: 'If you gather your strength and leap, you will sit with the non-Arab on his throne to make them superstitious.' So I made a leap, and I was with him on his throne. They began to trample me with their feet and hands, so I said: 'We do not do this to your messengers. If I have acted weakly or foolishly, do not hold it against me, for messengers are not treated this way.'" The king said: "If you wish, we will cross to you, and if you wish, you will cross to us." I said: "No, rather we will cross to you." He said: So we crossed to them. They chained every five, seven, six, and ten together in a chain so they would not flee. We crossed to them and lined up against them. They shot at us until they caused many casualties among us. Al-Mughira said to al-Nu’man: "The people have been struck hard, they have gone out, they have been struck hard. If only you would show forbearance." Al-Nu’man said: "You are a man of merits, and you have witnessed [battles] with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. But I witnessed with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that when he did not fight at the beginning of the day, he would wait until the sun passed the meridian, the winds blew, and victory descended." Then he said: "I will shake my banner three times. At the first shake, let the man satisfy his need and perform ablution. At the second, let the man check his sandal strap and the readiness of his weapon. When I shake it the third time, charge, and let no one wait for anyone. And if al-Nu’man is killed, let no one wait for him. I am calling upon Allah with a supplication, so I adjure every Muslim man to say 'Amen' to it." He said: "O Allah, grant al-Nu’man martyrdom today in victory and conquest for them." The people said 'Amen'. He shook his banner three times, then said: "Draw his sword," then he charged, and the people charged. He said: And he was the first to fall. He said: I came upon him and remembered his command, so I did not wait for him, and I marked a sign so I would know his place. He said: When we killed a man, his companions would be distracted from us. Dhu al-Janahayn fell from a grey mule of his, and his stomach burst open, so Allah granted victory to the Muslims. I came to the place of al-Nu’man, and he still had a breath of life. I came to him with a water skin and washed his face. He said: "Who is this?" I said: "Ma’qil bin Yasar." He said: "What did the people do?" I said: "Allah granted them victory." He said: "To Allah belongs the praise. Write that to Umar." And his soul departed. The people gathered around al-Ash’ath bin Qays. They sent to the mother of his child: "Did al-Nu’man leave a testament with you, or do you have a document?" She said: "A small box containing a document." They brought it out, and in it was: "If al-Nu’man is killed, then so-and-so, and if he is killed, then so-and-so." Hammad said: Ali bin Zayd said: Abu Uthman narrated to us, he said: I took the good news to Umar. He said: "What did al-Nu’man do?" I said: "He was killed." He said: "What did so-and-so do?" I said: "He was killed." He said: "What did so-and-so do?" I said: "He was killed." He said: "To Allah we belong," and I said: "And others whom we do not know." He said: "We do not know them, but Allah knows them."
حدثنا عفان قال ثنا حماد بن سلمة قال أخبرنا أبو عمران الجوني عن علقمة بن عبد الله المزني عن معقل بن يسار أن عمر بن الخطاب شاور الهرمزان في فارس وأصبهان وآذربيجان فقال اصبهان الرأس وفارس وآذربيجان الجناحان فإن قطعت أحد الجناحين مال الرأس بالجناح الآخر وإن قطعت الرأس وقع الجناحان فابدأ بالرأس فدخل المسجد فإذا هو بالنعمان بن مقرن يصلي فقعد إلى جنبه فلما قضى صلاته قال ما أراني إلا مستعملك قال اما جابيا فلا ولكن غازيا قال فإنك غاز فوجهه وكتب إلى أهل الكوفة أن يمدوه قال ومعه الزبير بن العوام وعمرو بن معدي كرب وحديفة وبن عمر والأشعث بن قيس قال فأرسل النعمان المغيرة بن شعبة إلى ملكهم وهو يقال له ذو الجناحين فقطع إليهم نهرهم فقيل لذي الجناحين إن رسول العرب ها هنا فشاور اصحابه فقال ما ترون أقعد له في بهجة الملك وهيئة الملك أو في هيئة الحرب قالوا لا بل أقعد له في بهجة الملك فقعد على سريره ووضع التاج على رأسه وقعد أبناء الملوك سماطين عليهم القرطة وأساور الذهب والديباج قال فأذن للمغيرة فأخذ بضبعة رجلان ومعه رمحه وسيفه قال فجعل يطعن برمحه في بسطهم يخرقها ليتطيروا حتى قام بين يديه قال فجعل يكلمه والترجمان يترجم بينهما إنكم معشر العرب أصابكم جوع وجهد فجئتم فإن شئتم مرناكم ورجعتم قال فتكلم المغيرة بن شعبة فحمد الله وأثنى عليه ثم قال إنا معشر العرب كنا أذلة يطؤونا ولا نطأهم ونأكل الكلاب والجيفة وإن الله ابتعث منا نبيا في شرف منا أوسطنا حسبا وأصدقنا حديثا قال فبعث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بما بعثه به فأخبرنا بأشياء وجدناها كما قال وأنه وعدنا فيما وعدنا أنا سنملك ما ها هنا ونغلب وأني أرى ها هنا بزة وهيئة ما من خلفي بتاركها حتى يصيبها قال فقالت لي نفسي لو جمعت جراميزك فوثبت فقعدت مع العلج على سريره حتى يتطير قال فوثبت وثبة فإذا أنا معه على سريره فجعلوا يطؤوني بأرجلهم وبأيديهم فقلت إنا لا نفعل هذا برسلكم فإن كنت عجزت أو استحمقت فلا تؤاخذوني فإن الرسل لا يفعل بهم هذا فقال الملك إن شئتم قطعنا إليكم وإن شئتم قطعتم إلينا فقلت لا بل نحن نقطع إليكم قال فقطعنا إليهم فسلسلوا كل خمسة وسبعة وستة وعشرة في سلسلة حتى لا يفروا فعبرنا إليهم فصاففناهم فرشقونا حتى أسرعوا فينا فقال المغيرة للنعمان إنه قد أسرع في الناس قد خرجوا قد أسرع فيهم فلو حلمت قال النعمان إنك لذو مناقب وقد شهدت مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ولكن شهدت مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فكان إذا لم يقاتل أول النهار ينتظر حتى تزول الشمس وتهب الرياح وتنزل النصر ثم قال إني هاز لوائي ثلاث هزات فأما أول هزة فليقض الرجل حاجته وليتوضأ وأما الثانية فلينظر الرجل إلى شسعه ورم من سلاحه فإذا هززت الثالثة فاحملوا ولا يلوين أحد على أحد وإن قتل النعمان فلا يلوين عليه أحد وإني داعي الله بدعوة فأقسمت على كل امرئ مسلم لما أمن عليها فقال اللهم ارزق النعمان اليوم الشهادة في نصر وفتح عليهم قال فأمن القوم وهز لواءه ثلاث هزات ثم قال سل درعه ثم حمل وحمل الناس قال وكان أول صريع قال فأتيت عليه فذكرت عزمته فلم ألو عليه وأعلمت علما حتى أعرف مكانه قال فجعلنا إذا قتلنا الرجل شغل عنا اصحابه قال ووقع ذو الجناحين عن بغلة له شهباء فانشق بطنه ففتح الله على المسلمين فأتيت مكان النعمان وبه رمق فأتيته باداوة فغسلت عن وجهه فقال من هذا فقلت معقل بن يسار قال ما فعل الناس قلت فتح الله عليهم قال لله الحمد اكتبوا ذلك إلى عمر وفاضت نفسه واجتمع الناس إلى الأشعث بن قيس قال فأرسلوا إلى أم ولده هل عهد إليك النعمان عهدا أم عندك كتاب قالت سفط فيه كتاب فأخرجوه فإذا فيه إن قتل النعمان ففلان وإن قتل فلان ففلان قال حماد قال علي بن زيد فحدثنا أبو عثمان قال ذهبت بالبشارة إلى عمر فقال ما فعل النعمان قلت قتل قال ما فعل فلان قلت قتل قال ما فعل فلان قلت قتل فاسترجع قلت وآخرون لا نعلمهم قال لا نعلمهم لكن الله يعلمهم
