Hadith 29:82
Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, he said: Isra'il informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu al-Salt and Abu Mudafi', who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab wrote to us while we were with al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin: "When you meet the enemy, do not flee; and when you take spoils, do not embezzle." When we met the enemy, al-Nu'man said to the people: "Do not engage them"—and that was on a Friday—"until the Commander of the Faithful ascends the pulpit to seek victory [from Allah]." He said: Then we engaged them, and al-Nu'man fell. He said: "Shroud me in a garment, and turn toward your enemy, and let them not terrify you." He said: Then Allah granted us victory. He said: The news reached Umar that al-Nu'man, and so-and-so, and so-and-so, and men we do not know, O Commander of the Faithful, had been killed. He said: "But Allah knows them."
حدثنا عبيد الله بن موسى قال أخبرنا إسرائيل عن أبي إسحاق عن أبي الصلت وأبي مدافع قال كتب إلينا عمر بن الخطاب ونحن مع النعمان بن مقرن إذا لقيتم العدو فلا تفروا وإذا غنمتم فلا تغلوا فلما لقينا العدو قال النعمان للناس لاتواقعوهم وذلك يوم الجمعة حتى يصعد أمير المؤمنين المنبر يستنصر قال ثم واقعناهم فانقض النعمان وقال سجوني ثوبا وأقبلوا على عدوكم ولا أهولنكم قال ففتح الله علينا قال وأتى عمر الخبر أنه اصيب النعمان وفلان وفلان ورجال لا نعرفهم يا امير المؤمنين قال لكن الله يعرفهم
