Hadith 29:9

Affan narrated to us, he said: Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us, he said: Thumamah bin Abdullah narrated to us, from Anas: That Khalid bin al-Walid directed the people on the day of al-Yamamah, and they came upon a river. They placed the lower parts of their cloaks into their laps, then they crossed over to them. They exchanged arrows, and the Muslims turned back, retreating. Khalid lowered his head for a moment, then he raised his head, and I was between him and al-Bara’. Khalid, when a matter distressed him, would look at the sky for a moment, then he would raise his head to the sky, and his opinion would be clarified for him. I took hold of al-Bara’ and pressed him toward the ground. He said, "O son of my brother, I am not breaking my fast." Then he said, "O Bara’, stand up." Al-Bara’ said, "Now?" He said, "Yes, now." So al-Bara’ mounted a mare of his, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "As for what follows, O people, there is no path to Medina; it is only Paradise." He urged them on for a moment, then his horse chewed a few chews—and it is as if I see it chewing its breasts—then he charged at them, and the people charged. Hammad bin Salamah said: Ubaydullah bin Abi Bakr informed me, from Anas, he said: There was a breach in their city, and Muhakkam al-Yamamah placed his feet upon it, and he was a large, bulky man. He began to recite rajaz poetry: "I am Muhakkam al-Yamamah, I am the pivot of the settlement, and I am, and I am." He said: And he was their champion. When he (al-Bara’) was able to strike him, he struck him, and al-Bara’ shielded himself with his shield, then al-Bara’ struck his leg and killed him. With Muhakkam al-Yamamah was a broad plate. He (al-Bara’) threw down his sword and took the plate of Muhakkam, then he charged and struck with it until it broke. He said, "May Allah make ugly what is between me and you," and he took his sword.
