Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 19:112

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Hushaym narrated to us, from Abu Bishr, from Yusuf ibn Mahak, that a slave of some of the people of Makkah stole a cloak belonging to Safwan ibn Umayyah. He was brought to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he ordered that his hand be cut off. He (the slave) said, "O Messenger of Allah, will you cut it off because of my garment?" He (the Prophet) said, "Why did you not do so before he brought him to me?"
