Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 19:38

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Waki’ narrated to us, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, who said: The thief, during the time of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to have his hand cut off for the price of a shield (mijan). And the shield, in those days, had a price. And he would not have his hand cut off for a trivial thing.
