Hadith 19:706

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, he said: Yahya bin Sa'id informed us, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, that Ma'iz bin Malik came to Abu Bakr and informed him that he had committed adultery. Abu Bakr said to him: "Conceal yourself, may Allah conceal you, and repent to Allah, for people change and do not reproach, and Allah accepts repentance from His servants." His soul did not find rest until he came to Umar and mentioned the same as he had mentioned to Abu Bakr. Umar said to him the same as Abu Bakr had said to him. His soul did not find rest until he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him that he had committed adultery. He turned away from him until he had said that repeatedly. When he persisted, he sent for his people and said to them: "Does he suffer from any madness?" They said: "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he is indeed sane." He said: "Is he a virgin or previously married?" They said: "Rather, he is previously married." So he ordered him to be stoned.
