Hadith 19:712
Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Yazid ibn Nu'aym, from his father, who said: Ma'iz ibn Malik came to the Prophet and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery, so establish the Book of Allah upon me." He turned away from him. Then he said: "I have committed adultery, so establish the Book of Allah upon me." He turned away from him, until he mentioned it four times. He said: "Take him away and stone him." When the stones touched him, he became intense [in pain] and fled. Then Abdullah ibn Unays (or ibn Anas) came out from his desert dwelling and struck him with the shank of a camel, and he brought him down. Then the people struck him until they killed him. It was mentioned to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, that he had fled. He said: "Why did you not leave him? Perhaps he would have repented, and Allah would have accepted his repentance. O 'Azzal (or O Hazzal), if you had covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you than what you have done."
