Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz wrote a letter which I read: "If the stolen goods are found with a man, and he says, 'I bought it,' then do not cut off his hand. Rather, bind him firmly in prison and do not let anyone speak to him until the command of Allah comes regarding him." He said: I mentioned that to Ata, and he disapproved of it.
