Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 19:9

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Ibn Numayr narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Talhah, from his mother, Aisha bint Mas’ud ibn al-Aswad, from her father, Mas’ud, who said: When that woman stole that velvet garment from the house of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, we considered that a grave matter, and the woman was from Quraysh. We came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to speak to him, and we said: "We will ransom her with forty ounces [of silver]." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Purification is better for her." When we heard the gentleness of the speech of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, we came to Usamah and said: "Speak to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw that, he stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "Why do you persist against me regarding a prescribed punishment from the punishments of Allah that has fallen upon one of the bondwomen of Allah? By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had done what she did, Muhammad would have cut off her hand."
