Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 26:145

Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Bassam, from Fudayl ibn ‘Amr, who said: Ibrahim said: None of the companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to return anything to the wife or the husband [i.e., they did not apply the doctrine of *radd* (returning the remainder to the spouse)]. He said: And Zayd used to give every person entitled to a fixed share their fixed share, and whatever remained, he placed it in the public treasury (*bayt al-mal*).
