Waki’ narrated to us, he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from Ibrahim, who said: ‘Abdullah used to divide [the inheritance] with the grandfather alongside the brothers down to one-third, and he would give every person entitled to a fixed share their fixed share. He would not grant inheritance to the maternal brothers alongside the grandfather, and he would not divide [the inheritance] with the paternal brothers alongside the brothers of both father and mother. If there were a sister of both father and mother, a brother of the father, and a grandfather, he would give the sister of both father and mother half, and the grandfather half. ‘Ali used to divide [the inheritance] with the grandfather alongside the brothers down to one-sixth, and he would give every person entitled to a fixed share their fixed share. He would not grant inheritance to the maternal brothers alongside the grandfather, and he would not divide [the inheritance] with the paternal brothers alongside the brothers of both father and mother. He would not increase the grandfather’s share alongside the child beyond one-sixth, unless there was no one else. If there were a sister of both father and mother, a brother of the father, and a grandfather, he would give the sister half, and place the [remaining] half between the grandfather and the brother. Zayd used to divide [the inheritance] with the grandfather alongside the brothers and sisters down to one-third; if it reached one-third, he would give him the one-third, and the brothers and sisters would have what remained. He would not grant inheritance to the maternal brothers alongside the grandfather, and he would not divide [the inheritance] with them. He used to divide [the inheritance] with the paternal brothers alongside the brothers of both father and mother, but he would not grant them anything. If there were a sister of both father and mother, a brother and a sister of the father, and a grandfather, he would give the sister of both father and mother half, and the brother and sister would divide [the remainder] with the grandfather. Abu Bakr said: This, according to the opinion of ‘Ali and ‘Abdullah, is [divided] into two shares, and according to the opinion of Zayd, it is [divided] into three shares.
