Waki’ narrated to us, he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Wahid, from Isma’il ibn Raja’, from Ibrahim, and from Sufyan, from whoever heard al-Sha’bi, who said regarding a mother, a full sister, and a grandfather: Zayd ibn Thabit said: Out of nine shares, the mother gets three, the grandfather gets four, and the sister gets two. ‘Ali said: The sister gets half (three), the mother gets one-third (two), and what remains is for the grandfather, which is one share. Ibn Mas’ud said: The sister gets half (three), the mother gets one-sixth (one), and what remains is for the grandfather, which is two shares. ‘Uthman said: In thirds; one-third for the mother, one-third for the sister, and one-third for the grandfather. Ibn ‘Abbas said: The mother gets one-third, and what remains is for the grandfather. Waki’ said: Al-Sha’bi said: Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf asked me about it, so I informed him of their sayings. The saying of ‘Ali pleased him, so he said: "Whose saying is this?" I said: "The saying of Abu Turab." Al-Hajjaj looked and said: "We did not criticize his judgment; we only criticized such and such."
