Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 11:112

Abu Usama narrated to us, from Abdullah bin al-Walid, from Abu Bakr bin Amr bin Utbah, from Ibn Umar, who said: I came upon Abdullah bin Makhramah, who was fallen [wounded] during the year of al-Yamamah, so I stood over him. He said, "O Abdullah bin Umar, does the fasting person break his fast?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then put some water for me in this shield, so that I may break my fast." So I went to the basin, and it was filled with blood. I struck it with a vessel I had with me, then I scooped some up in it, and I came to him, but I found that he had already passed away.
