Hadith 11:144
Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, from al-Zubayr ibn al-Khirrit, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: It was made obligatory upon the Muslims that one man among them should fight ten of the polytheists, according to His saying: "If there are twenty among you who are steadfast, they will overcome two hundred; and if there are one hundred among you, they will overcome a thousand." This was difficult for them, so Allah sent down the alleviation. He made it obligatory upon one man to fight two men, according to the saying of the Exalted: "So if there are one hundred among you who are steadfast, they will overcome two hundred." Thus, that was alleviated for them, and they were reduced in victory in proportion to that.
