Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 20:43

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Simak ibn 'Ar'ara, from Ali, who said: When they wanted to lift the Black Stone, they disputed over it. They said: "Let the first man who comes out of this path judge between us." He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was the first to come out. He judged between them that they should place it in a garment, then all the tribes together should lift it.
