Hadith 20:55

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Simak, from Hanash ibn al-Mu'tamir, who said: A pit was dug in Yemen for a lion, and the lion fell into it. The people began to crowd at the edge of the pit, and a man fell into it. He grabbed onto a man, then the other grabbed onto another, and four fell into it and all of them perished therein. The people did not know what to do. Then Ali, may Allah have mercy on him, came and said: "If you wish, I will judge between you with a judgment that shall be binding upon you until you come to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." He said: "I place the blood money upon the one who dug the edge of the pit." He assigned for the first, who was in the pit, a quarter of the blood money; for the second, a third of the blood money; for the third, half of the blood money; and for the fourth, the full blood money. He said: They were satisfied with that until they came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and informed him of Ali’s judgment, and he approved the judgment.
