Hadith 9:1244
Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Shayban narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr informed us, from Zayd ibn Uqbah, from Samurah ibn Jundub, who said: I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab saying: Women are three: A woman who is easy-going, gentle, chaste, Muslim, loving, and fertile; she helps her family against time, and does not help time against her family, and rarely does one find her. The second is a woman who is chaste and Muslim, but she is only a vessel for children; she has nothing beyond that. The third is a shackle infested with lice, which Allah places upon the neck of whom He wills, and none removes it but Him. Men are three: A man who is chaste, Muslim, and intelligent; he deliberates on matters when they approach, and he is insightful; so when they occur, he emerges from them by his opinion. A man who is chaste and Muslim, but has no opinion; so when a matter occurs, he comes to the one of opinion and counsel, consults him, and asks for his command, then he acts according to his command. And a man who is oppressive and confused; he does not deliberate for guidance, nor does he obey one who guides.
