Hadith 9:1480

'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Dawud, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, that he separated the two who performed *li'an* (mutual cursing). He said: So he (the husband) clung to her, and I said to him, "You have no wealth." He said: So he went to Abu Burdah and said, "My wealth and my wife are both going away." He (Abu Burdah) said, "No." He said, "Indeed, the one who ordered him to perform *li'an* between us said, 'You have nothing.'" He said, "And did he do that?" He said, "Yes." He said: So I came, and Abu Burdah said, "What is this one saying?" I said, "And what is he saying?" He said, "He says his wife and his wealth have gone." I said, "What would compel the corrupt to commit adultery? He marries the woman, then accuses her, then performs *li'an* with her, and takes her wealth." He said: So he wrote about that to al-Hajjaj. He said: So he (al-Hajjaj) said, "He spoke the truth." Then a man came to me, and I thought that al-Hajjaj had ordered him. He said, "That which you said, is it something you said based on your own opinion, or something that reached you?" I said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) decreed it regarding the sister of Banu 'Ajlan."
