Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 9:457

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd al-Samad al-Ammi narrated to us, from Budayl ibn Maysara al-Uqayli, from Ibn al-Waddin, that a man sought to marry the daughter of a man from the people of Syria, [the daughter of] Mahira. He married her to him, but they sent to him another daughter, the daughter of Qatada. After he had consummated the marriage with her, the man asked her, "Whose daughter are you?" She said, "The daughter of so-and-so," meaning Qatada. He said, "I only married the daughter of Mahira from your mother." They took the matter up to Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan. He said, "A woman for a woman," and he asked those around him from the people of Syria, and they said, "A woman for a woman." The man said, "O Muawiya, refer this to Ali ibn Abi Talib." He said, "Go to him." They went to Ali, and Ali picked up something from the ground and said, "The judgment in this is easier than this. For this [first] one, she has what you gave her as a dowry for what you made lawful of her private parts. It is upon her father to compensate the other [woman] with what you gave to this one, and do not approach her until the waiting period (idda) of this other one has expired." He said: And I think he flogged her father, or he intended to flog him.
