Ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Sa’id, from Qatadah, from Abu al-Malih, from Suhaymah bint Umayr al-Shaybaniyyah, who said: My husband was reported dead to me from Qandabil, so I married al-Abbas ibn Tarif, brother of the Banu Qays, after him. Then my first husband arrived, so we went to Uthman while he was besieged. He said, "How can I judge between you in this state of mine?" We said, "We have accepted your judgment." So he gave the husband the choice between the dowry and the woman. When Uthman was struck [killed], we went to Ali and narrated the story to him. He gave the first husband the choice between the dowry and the woman. He chose the dowry, so he took two thousand from me and two thousand from the other [man].
