Hadith 14:188

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Affan narrated to us, he said: Ja'far ibn Sulayman narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Tayyah narrated to us, he said: A man asked Abd al-Rahman ibn Khanbash, "How did the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, act on the night the devils plotted against him?" He said: "The devils came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from the valleys and descended upon him from the mountains. Among them was a devil who had a torch of fire with which he wanted to burn the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so he became terrified of him." Ja'far said: "I think he said he began to retreat." He said: "Then Gabriel came and said, 'O Muhammad, say.' He said, 'What should I say?' He said, 'Say: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, from the evil of what He created, brought into existence, and produced; and from the evil of what descends from the heaven and what ascends into it; and from the evil of what He produced in the earth and what emerges from it; and from the evil of the trials of the night and the day; and from the evil of every visitor, except a visitor who comes with good, O Most Merciful.'" He said: "Then the fire of the devil was extinguished, and Allah defeated them."
