Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 36:103

Abu Usama narrated to us, he said: Ismail narrated to us, from Qays, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent ‘Amr over the army of Dhat al-Salasil to [the tribes of] Lakhm, Judham, and the outskirts of al-Sham. He said: And there was a scarcity among his companions. He said: So ‘Amr said to them, "None of you shall kindle a fire." This was difficult for them, so they spoke to Abu Bakr to speak to ‘Amr. He spoke to him, and he [‘Amr] said, "No one shall kindle a fire, or I will throw him into it." He met the enemy and prevailed over them and plundered their camp. The people said, "Shall we not pursue them?" He said, "No, I fear that they may have reinforcements behind these mountains with which they might cut off the Muslims." When they returned, they complained about him to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He said, "You are truthful, O ‘Amr." He [‘Amr] said, "There was a scarcity among my companions, and I feared that the enemy would be emboldened to kill them. When Allah granted me victory over them, they said, 'Shall we pursue them?' I said, 'I fear that they may have reinforcements behind these mountains with which they might cut off the Muslims.'" He said: So the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) praised his conduct.
