Hadith 36:105

Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, he said: Isra'il informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Sha'bi, that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) wrote a letter to Ra'iyah al-Suhaymi. Ra'iyah took the letter of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and patched his bucket with it. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent a military detachment, and they took his family and his wealth. Ra'iyah escaped on a horse of his, naked, having nothing on him. He came to his daughter, who was married among the Banu Hilal. He said: They had accepted Islam, and she had accepted Islam with them, and they had invited him to Islam. He said: He came to his daughter, and the people used to sit in the courtyard of her house. He approached the house from behind it. When his daughter saw him naked, she threw a garment over him and said, "What is the matter with you?" He said, "All evil; neither family nor wealth has been left for me." He said, "Where is your husband?" She said, "With the camels." He said, "So he came to him and informed him." He said, "Take my riding camel with its saddle, and we will provide you with milk." He said, "I have no need for that, but give me the shepherd’s young camel and a water skin, for I am racing Muhammad so that he does not divide my family and my wealth." So he set off, and he had a garment; if he covered his head with it, his buttocks would be exposed, and if he covered his buttocks with it, his head would be exposed. He set off until he entered Medina at night, and he was near the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) prayed the dawn prayer, he said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, extend your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) extended his hand, but when Ra'iyah went to touch it, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) withdrew it. Then Ra'iyah said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, extend your hand." He said, "And who are you?" He said, "Ra'iyah al-Suhaymi." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) took him by his upper arm and raised it, then said, "O people, this is Ra'iyah al-Suhaymi, to whom I wrote, and he took my letter and patched his bucket with it." Then he accepted Islam. Then he said, "O Messenger of Allah, my family and my wealth." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "As for your wealth, it has been divided among the Muslims. And as for your family, look at whoever you can find among them." He said, "So I went out, and there was a son of mine who recognized the riding camel, and he was standing by it. I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said, 'This is my son.' So he sent Bilal with me and said, 'Go with him and ask him: Is he your father? If he says yes, then hand him over to him.'" He said, "So Bilal came to him and said, 'Is he your father?' He said, 'Yes.' So he handed him over to him." He said, "Bilal came to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said, 'By Allah, I have never seen anyone of them weeping for the other.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, 'That is the harshness of the Bedouins.'"
